One industrial format, different local markets
The returnable water container of approximately 18.9–20 litres has different names across Latin America. “Botellón” is widely used in Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic; “bidón” is common in Peru; and “garrafón” is widely used in Guatemala. This page uses “returnable water container” as the common technical term while retaining the names used in each target market.

Water plants across these markets do not operate under identical conditions, but they share one fundamental requirement: converting returnable containers of variable condition into containers prepared for hygienic, repeatable, and verifiable filling.

The machine may continue operating even when coverage, pressure, temperature, chemical contact, disinfection, drainage, or final rinsing is no longer sufficient.

If a pump, tank, heating system, chemical supply, or final rinse fails without stopping the process, unqualified containers may continue toward filling.

Two investment paths
4R does not recommend the same machine for every plant. We review the actual function of the existing equipment, the missing stages, and the required result before determining whether to strengthen, replace, or build a new line.
This route is appropriate when part of the existing installation remains useful, but physical washing, caustic contact, container preparation, or automation is insufficient.
This route is appropriate when the complete internal-washing process is outdated, its functions cannot be controlled reliably, or the project requires an integrated new line.
Three internal-washer configurations
The first two configurations strengthen an installation that retains technically suitable downstream stages. The third independently provides the complete internal-washing process.
Strengthens physical removal from the container interior, bottom, neck, and shoulder before the container enters the existing internal washer.
Combines two independent high-pressure stages with a separate, controlled heated-caustic washing stage.
Independently provides the complete process required for a full replacement or a new returnable-container line.
Complete process logic
The required result can be achieved by integrating a 4R pre-washer with a technically suitable existing washer, or by installing a complete internal washer within a new line.
Overall process design
When the new pre-washer already provides sufficient high-pressure removal and heated-caustic contact, some stations in the existing washer may potentially be reassigned to disinfection or rinsing, provided that its structure and circulation circuits allow the change.
One possible combined arrangement may include heated-caustic washing, two independent high-pressure stages, strengthened disinfection, and final product-water rinsing.
The configuration depends on container material and contamination, station arrangement, pumps, piping, nozzles, chemical circuits, temperature, disinfectant strategy, effective contact time, drainage, line speed, and the condition of retained equipment.
4R defines station functions as part of the overall process design. Final feasibility must be confirmed through a technical review of the existing installation.
