The returnable water container of approximately 18.9–20 litres has different names across Latin America. “Botellón” is widely used in Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic; “bidón” is common in Peru; and “garrafón” is widely used in Guatemala. This page uses “returnable water container” as the common technical term while retaining the names used in each target market.

A Running Machine Does Not Automatically Mean a Controlled Process

Water plants across these markets do not operate under identical conditions, but they share one fundamental requirement: converting returnable containers of variable condition into containers prepared for hygienic, repeatable, and verifiable filling.

Returned Containers Arrive in Different Conditions

Time outside the plant, transport, storage, use, and environmental exposure affect the condition of each returned batch.

Impact: one washing intensity may be insufficient for difficult returns and unnecessarily costly for normal containers.

Important technical distinction: high-pressure washing and heated-caustic washing are separate process stages. “High pressure” does not mean that the caustic solution is necessarily applied at high pressure.

Overall process design

Adding a Pre-Washer May Change the Optimum Role of the Existing Washer

When the new pre-washer already provides sufficient high-pressure removal and heated-caustic contact, some stations in the existing washer may potentially be reassigned to disinfection or rinsing, provided that its structure and circulation circuits allow the change.

One possible combined arrangement may include heated-caustic washing, two independent high-pressure stages, strengthened disinfection, and final product-water rinsing.

This Is Not a Fixed Formula

The configuration depends on container material and contamination, station arrangement, pumps, piping, nozzles, chemical circuits, temperature, disinfectant strategy, effective contact time, drainage, line speed, and the condition of retained equipment.

4R defines station functions as part of the overall process design. Final feasibility must be confirmed through a technical review of the existing installation.

Does this solution cover botellones, bidones, and garrafones?

Yes. These terms may describe equivalent or similar formats depending on the country, but compatibility is not determined by the name alone. 4R confirms capacity, dimensions, diameter, height, neck finish, material, weight, and container strength before defining the configuration.

Should we strengthen the existing washer or replace it?

The existing washer may be retained when its downstream disinfection and final product-water rinsing remain effective and controllable. Strengthening is appropriate when physical removal or caustic contact is insufficient. Replacement should be considered when the complete process is outdated, incomplete, or no longer reliable.

Can 4R equipment be integrated into an existing line?

Yes, subject to a technical interface review. We evaluate conveyor height and direction, line speed, available space, container transfer, electrical controls, drainage, chemical circulation, upstream and downstream rhythm, and the condition of retained equipment.

How do the three internal-washer configurations differ?

The High-Pressure Pre-Washer provides two independent high-pressure stages. The heated-caustic configuration adds controlled heated-caustic washing. How can ineffective washing be prevented from continuing unnoticed?

Can the same equipment be used in different Latin American countries?
