External washing and internal washing should be separated into two controlled process zones.

Returned 3-gallon and 5-gallon bottles may arrive with dust, mud, dried water marks, label residues, transport contamination, and other exterior deposits. This contamination belongs to the outer bottle surface, not to the same hygiene zone as internal washing and product-contact preparation.

In line layouts where external and internal washing are combined within one integrated machine or shared handling zone, dirty exterior wash water, loosened debris, brush carry-off, and splashing must be controlled close to the internal washing process. This makes contamination separation more difficult and increases the hygiene burden on the downstream washing section.

4R separates external washing from internal washing. The external washer first reduces the contamination carried on the bottle outside; the internal washer then focuses on the bottle interior, bottle neck, product-contact surfaces, and controlled disinfection. This creates a clearer process boundary between dirty returned-bottle handling and hygienic internal preparation.

Cleaning is created by coordinated mechanical, chemical, thermal, and rinsing action.

The bottle does not simply pass through a wash tunnel. During brush-contact stages, it moves forward while rotating, allowing the contoured brushes to follow the external bottle profile. Spray is applied during cleaning to carry loosened contamination away from the surface before the bottle enters the following rinse stage.

The external washing process follows a staged water-use logic. Recycled water is used where it is suitable for removing loose contamination and performing intermediate rinsing; cleaner water is reserved for the final rinse, where removal of residual caustic is critical.

Recycled-Water Pre-Rinse

Used at the beginning of the process to remove loose dirt and debris before the bottle enters brush and heated-caustic washing stages.

Filtered Recirculated Rinse

Water from intermediate rinse stages is collected, filtered, and reused to reduce chemical carryover while managing water consumption.

Clean-Water Final Rinse

A blocked nozzle, weak pump output, pressure loss, or circulation failure can reduce washing performance while the conveyor and brushes continue to operate. For that reason, the external washer monitors the pressure condition of all pumps.
